Don't worry, kiddo. Do you know how many people there are on NG that have been here longer than a year and also haven't contributed anything? Good art takes time. Look at all the portal submission that start off, "tihs is muh furst flash evar it took me 1 hour its mario sprites fighting wit dbz powers and im only 13 so vote 5 pleaz." I don't think you need worry about beating any of the competiton to the punch.
Your first submit might have been a one minute poop joke, but it's still superior to 99.9% of the tallentless garbage that somehow gets approved by anime-fapping, gay bashing, Halo-geek children too young to grow pubes that populate NewGrounds.
If it weren't for the occasional nugget of originality leaking into the portal every once in a while such as your flash and several others, I'd have taken my own life while drunkenly cursing the name Tom Fulp by now.
Keep in mind that here you have no deadlines. Put as much or as little effort as you want into what you do, just be sure it's what YOU want from your art. Don't create for anyone but yourself. You are only sharing it with us once it's done. It is we who should be thankful.
Take it easy and stay the course (ewww, I can't believe I'm ending on a George W. Bush catchphrase. What a fuckin' loser.)
